What Is A Black Belt?
The modern martial arts (including Taekwondo) adopted the use of the Black Belt to symbolize an expert in the given
art. In most cases different degrees (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) are assigned to the wearer by examination. Taekwondo
begins certifying full instructors at 4th Dan (degree). Normally by 5th Dan the individual is considered a "Master Instructor".
A beginning student can expect to spend 2-5 years of practice before reaching
the point of black belt 1st degree. An instructor would be both in practice and advanced study for 12 to 18 years of study
in order to reach 4th dan. Examinations consider physical skill, academic achievement, leadership, competition and other factors
along with time in practice to determine the rank.
